Organ-on-chip and MPS
Updated Oct 23, 2026
What it is
Organ-on-chip devices culture human cells in microfluidic channels with flow and, in some designs, mechanical forces. Microphysiological systems (MPS) is the broader term and includes multi-organ circuits and organoid-on-chip formats.
Where it is used
Pharma uses MPS mostly for investigative toxicology, ADME and disease biology. Liver, gut, kidney and CNS or blood-brain barrier models lead demand. Results usually inform internal go or no-go decisions rather than replace required animal studies.
Evidence base
- Emulate's blinded study of 27 drugs reported 87% sensitivity and 100% specificity for drug-induced liver injury. The study is company-authored.
- FDA scientists showed that assay choices can distort chip readouts.
- Throughput is rising: Emulate's AVA system runs up to 96 chips per run, and Vivodyne and Xellar pair human tissues with robotics and AI.
Commercial picture
Tracxn counts 46 organ-on-chip companies with about $478M of equity raised. Strategic buyers are moving in: Bruker took a majority stake in MIMETAS (August 2026) and Quris-AI bought Nortis (October 2024). Private revenue is mostly undisclosed. One public data point, the Hesperos S-1, showed about $5M of annual revenue in 2022.

Open questions
- Can chip unit economics work at pharma screening scale?
- Will the first ISTAND qualification create a required purchase or only a reference?
- Will the data, rather than the hardware, become the main product?
