Buyers, channels and consolidation
Updated Oct 23, 2026
Buyers
- Pharma preclinical safety, DMPK and translational groups. The largest budget, mostly spent on internal decisions. Enterprise sales cycles into pharma R&D are often cited at 9 to 18 months.
- CROs. Increasingly the channel and sometimes the buyer. Charles River runs its Alternative Methods Advancement Project, formed a NAMs advisory board and is buying PathoQuest. IQVIA agreed to buy Charles River's in vitro discovery sites in February 2026.
- Government. NIH (Complement-ARIE, ORIVA), ARPA-H (CATALYST, up to $125M) and UK and EU programs fund development and validation.
- Chemicals, cosmetics and agrochemicals. Regulation drives demand: EU cosmetics rules, REACH, TSCA, FIFRA and the UK targets.
How incumbents frame it
Charles River's leadership calls the shift an evolution and expects hybrid approaches. In 2025 it put about $50M of annual revenue at risk from FDA's NAM push, with no immediate impact expected.
Consolidation
Strategic acquirers are buying NAM assets:
| Year | Buyer | Target |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Merck KGaA | HUB Organoids |
| 2024 | Quris-AI | Nortis |
| 2025 | Sartorius | MatTek ($80M) |
| 2025 | InSphero | DOPPL |
| 2026 | IQVIA | Charles River discovery sites (~$145M, agreed) |
| 2026 | Charles River | PathoQuest |
| 2026 | InSphero | PhenoVista |
| 2026 | Bruker | MIMETAS (majority) |
Most prices are undisclosed. The disclosed ones are modest: MatTek sold for $80M on more than $20M of sales.
